Understanding Your Septic System
All drainage from appliances in a house collect into a single pipe, usually four-inch, that flows into the septic tank. The majority of tanks are built using concrete and typically measure approximately 8.5 feet long, roughly 5.5 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall. The inlet is usually three inches above the outlet. A baffle in the tank traps floating solids in the entry area. Usually, there exists an outlet connection, sometimes with a screen, to prevent solids from getting into the field lines. Debris collects at the bottom where they are decomposed by bacteria and enzymes. Clear water flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically 4” diameter, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the treated liquid to seep through the soil to be further treated by normal soil filtration and bacteria before seeping down into groundwater. The solids accumulate at the bottom of the tank until the tank is serviced.
