The Functionality of Your Septic System

Waste from fixtures in a house collect into a single pipe, usually four-inch diameter, that flows into the septic tank. Commonly, tanks are made of concrete and average around 8.5 feet in length, 5-1/2’ wide, and 4-1/2’ high. The entry point is usually 3” the outlet. A barrier in the tank holds floating solids in the incoming section. There is generally an outlet pipe, sometimes with a filter, to prevent solids from entering the field lines. The solids settle at the bottom where they are digested by bacteria and enzymes. Liquid effluent flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically 4” diameter, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the treated liquid to percolate through the soil to be further cleaned by normal soil filtration and bacteria before seeping down into groundwater. The solids stay at the bottom of the tank until the tank is pumped clean.
