How Septic Systems Work

All the fixtures in a house direct their drains into a central pipe, usually measuring 4 inches across, which flows into the septic tank. Most tanks are made from concrete and are approximately 8.5 feet long, 5.5 feet wide, and 4.5 feet high. The inlet is usually set about 3 inches above the outlet, and a baffle inside the tank holds floating solids on the inlet side.

To stop solids from reaching the field lines, there is generally an outlet tee that may have a filter. Solids accumulate at the bottom of the tank, where they are digested by bacteria and enzymes. The clear water moves through the outlet filter and tee into the field lines, which are typically 4-inch diameter, perforated, corrugated pipes. This setup allows the effluent to filter through the soil, where it is further cleansed by natural soil filtration and bacteria before reaching the groundwater. The solids stay in the tank until it is pumped out.
