How Your Septic System Works
All drainage from installations in a residence collect into a central pipe, usually four-inch, that flows into the septic tank. Most tanks are made of concrete and generally measure 8.5 feet in length, 5-1/2’ wide, and about 4.5 feet high. The intake is usually 3” the outlet. A baffle in the tank holds floating solids in the entry area. Usually, there exists an outlet connection, sometimes with a mesh, to prevent solids from entering the field lines. Solids accumulate at the bottom where they are digested by bacteria and enzymes. Liquid effluent flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically four-inch diameter, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the effluent water to filter through the soil to be subsequently purified by normal soil filtration and bacteria before seeping down into groundwater. The solids remain at the bottom of the tank until the tank is emptied.
