The Functionality of Your Septic System
All drainage from appliances in a residence collect into a single pipe, usually 4”, that flows into the septic tank. The majority of tanks are made of concrete and average around 8.5 feet in length, roughly 5.5 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall. The entry point is usually three inches the outlet. A barrier in the tank traps floating solids in the entry area. Typically, there is an outlet tee, sometimes with a filter, to prevent solids from entering the field lines. The solids settle at the bottom where they are decomposed by bacteria and enzymes. Treated water flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically four-inch, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the effluent water to percolate through the soil to be further cleaned by normal soil filtration and bacteria before entering into groundwater. The solids remain at the bottom of the tank until the tank is serviced.
