Understanding Your Septic System
Drains from all household fixtures collect into a central pipe, typically 4 inches in diameter, leading to the septic tank. Most tanks are constructed of concrete and are around 8.5 feet long, 5.5 feet wide, and 4.5 feet high. The inlet is usually positioned about 3 inches above the outlet, and a baffle inside the tank holds floating solids on the inlet side.
To stop solids from reaching the field lines, there is generally an outlet tee that may have a filter. Solids settle at the bottom of the tank, where they are broken down by bacteria and enzymes. The clear water moves through the outlet filter and tee into the field lines, which are typically 4-inch diameter, perforated, corrugated pipes. This setup allows the effluent to seep through the soil, where it is further cleansed by natural soil filtration and bacteria before reaching the groundwater. The solids stay in the tank until it is pumped out.
