The Functionality of Your Septic System
Drains from installations in a house collect into a central pipe, usually 4”, that flows into the septic tank. Commonly, tanks are built using concrete and average around 8-1/2’ long, 5.5 feet wide, and 4-1/2’ high. The inlet is usually three inches the outlet. A baffle in the tank traps floating solids in the incoming section. Typically, there is an outlet pipe, sometimes with a mesh, to prevent solids from clogging the field lines. The solids settle at the bottom where they are broken down by bacteria and enzymes. Treated water flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically 4” diameter, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the wastewater to seep through the soil to be further cleaned by normal soil filtration and bacteria before seeping down into groundwater. The solids remain at the bottom of the tank until the tank is emptied.
