How Your Septic System Works

Drains from installations in a residence collect into a central pipe, usually four-inch, that flows into the septic tank. Most tanks are constructed from concrete and average around approximately 8.5 feet long, 5-1/2’ wide, and 4-1/2’ high. The intake is usually three inches the outlet. A baffle in the tank holds floating solids in the incoming section. Usually, there exists an outlet connection, sometimes with a screen, to prevent solids from clogging the field lines. Solids accumulate at the bottom where they are decomposed by bacteria and enzymes. Clear water flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically four-inch, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the treated liquid to filter through the soil to be further cleaned by normal soil filtration and bacteria before seeping down into groundwater. The solids stay at the bottom of the tank until the tank is emptied.
