Understanding Your Septic System
All drainage from installations in a residence collect into a main pipe, usually four-inch, that flows into the septic tank. Commonly, tanks are made of concrete and generally measure 8.5 feet in length, roughly 5.5 feet wide, and about 4.5 feet high. The intake is usually 3” the outlet. A baffle in the tank traps floating solids in the entry area. There is generally an outlet connection, sometimes with a mesh, to prevent solids from getting into the field lines. Debris collects at the bottom where they are decomposed by bacteria and enzymes. Liquid effluent flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically four-inch diameter, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the treated liquid to filter through the soil to be further cleaned by normal soil filtration and bacteria before draining into groundwater. The solids remain at the bottom of the tank until the tank is emptied.
