Understanding Your Septic System
Drains from installations in a residence collect into a single pipe, usually 4”, that flows into the septic tank. The majority of tanks are made of concrete and typically measure approximately 8.5 feet long, 5.5 feet wide, and about 4.5 feet high. The intake is usually three inches the outlet. A barrier in the tank traps floating solids in the entry area. There is generally an outlet connection, sometimes with a filter, to prevent solids from entering the field lines. Solids accumulate at the bottom where they are decomposed by bacteria and enzymes. Treated water flows through the outlet filter and tee to the field lines, which are typically four-inch, perforated, corrugated pipe. This allows the wastewater to seep through the soil to be further cleaned by normal soil filtration and bacteria before entering into groundwater. The solids remain at the bottom of the tank until the tank is emptied.
