Understanding Your Septic System

Drains from all household fixtures collect into a central pipe, typically 4 inches in diameter, leading to the septic tank. Most tanks are built with concrete and are approximately 8.5 feet long, 5.5 feet wide, and 4.5 feet high. The inlet is usually located about 3 inches above the outlet, and a baffle inside the tank captures floating solids on the inlet side.

The outlet tee, often fitted with a filter, is designed to keep solids from getting into the drainage field. Solids sink at the bottom of the tank, where they are digested by bacteria and enzymes. The clear water flows through the outlet filter and tee into the field lines, which are typically 4-inch diameter, perforated, corrugated pipes. This setup allows the effluent to percolate through the soil, where it is further cleansed by natural soil filtration and bacteria before reaching the groundwater. The solids remain in the tank until it is pumped out.
